Super Familiar with The Wilsons
Marriage 2.0 with kids…and all the side quests!
Super Familiar with the Wilsons is a weekly comedy podcast about second marriage blended family life, and the beautiful chaos of parenting, aging, and figuring it all out (again). Hosted by Amanda and Josh, partners in life, love, and side quests, each episode dives into real-life stories, quirky observations, listener emails, and spontaneous tangents that somehow always circle back to relationships, resilience, and the absurdity of modern life.
Whether you’re navigating your own second act, raising kids who don’t want your help, or just wondering why birds seem to aim for your head, you’ll find humor, honesty, and heart here. Expect: offbeat storytelling, second-marriage dynamics, parenting fails, philosophical detours, and new friends you didn’t know you needed.
Familiar Wilsons Media produces content to bring people together. We are curious, hopeful, and try not to take ourselves too seriously...admittedly, with varying degrees of success.

FIFA Is Corrupt and Dating Fails with Gavin Belson
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We invited Gavin from Be There With Belson over to talk about the World Cup, and for a few glorious minutes we actually stayed on topic. We get into soccer gatekeeping, why everyone becomes an elite tactical genius every four years, whether FIFA deserves your trust, and the surprisingly wholesome side of a tournament that somehow convinces billions of strangers to care about the same thing at the same time.
Then the conversation wanders off like a toddler in the ALDI center aisle. We end up discussing modern dating, self-worth, perimenopause, medieval beer, coffee, conspiracy theories, and when your friends should have veto power over your dating profile.
Also, Gavin may have the greatest collection of "How did this happen to me?" stories of any human we've ever met.
Topics include: World Cup, soccer, football fandom, FIFA, Premier League, dating apps, self-worth, conspiracy theories, history trivia, Flashbacks, and whatever happened in the ten minutes we forgot to stay on topic.

Cold Open And Content Warning
SPEAKER_02No, no.
SPEAKER_01I mean there's a yeah, no, there's a there's a lot of um yeah, yeah, absolutely. Uh there's a lot of stories Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well I I I won't I won't You are made of meat my friend all the way down.
JoshThe following podcast uses words like and and also if you're not into any of that shit, then now's your chance.
SPEAKER_00Three, two, one run. Welcome back to the conversation. Tell me who I'm talking to. Get on down to imagination. You are me and I am you. Familiar. Don't be stranger.
AmandaAmanda.
JoshAnd I'm Josh. And I'm Gavin. 2.0 with kids. And all the side quests.
AmandaUsually you say kids and I say side quests.
JoshJesus, we can't fucking get through one one.
AmandaWell, you fucked it up, not me.
JoshFrom the Be There With Belson podcast, he is currently, currently, right now as we speak, he's in England.
SPEAKER_01Uh, because, and this is a revolutionary thing. I'm English.
AmandaThis is where I live.
JoshSo we have Gavin on today to talk about a couple of different things that are are, or at least one of them is germane to current topics. The
World Cup Fandom Without Gatekeeping
JoshWorld Cup just ended, and the Wilson family got way into the World Cup. First of all, as someone who is a proper football fan, when when people like me all of a sudden get into it, are you like, oh, that makes me so happy? Are you like, you know, this is my sport, you you don't know what you're talking about, leave it alone.
SPEAKER_01Um no, I I don't want to gatekeep it. I think it's great when uh people who're not necessarily interested in football beforehand get into it. I think that's great. Um, anyone who enjoys sport in general or anything like that, I always say the sport is has greater drama than any drama you can ever write. It's got that there's that beauty to it, it's got everything you want, really. I do have some issues.
JoshOh, let's hear them all. Oh, go ahead. You mean with us or in general?
SPEAKER_01No, not not with you. Um it's the people who have very strong opinions about either particular players or tactics or things like that who don't have the knowledge to back that up. That's the problem with a World Cup or a big event like that. That's everybody decides they're an expert at that point. It's one of the reasons that I don't like watching football in pubs, is because I'm surrounded by people who will irritate me immensely because they don't know what they're talking about.
AmandaWe call those people armchair quarterbacks here because they will happily yell at every coach and every player, but yet not have ever played the sport and or have like the deep historical knowledge to understand. I mean, sometimes they're right, but also it it it really bothers me too.
SPEAKER_01It's it's fine to, you know, it's fine to enjoy it and like who you like and all of that, absolutely. It's just there's a lot of bad takes.
JoshUm, come with the receipts, for example. Bad takes. Let's hear it.
SPEAKER_01I don't want to insult your country.
US Media Hype And Bad Takes
SPEAKER_01Um I yes, you do. Um so the pre-tournament um talk about the US national side from your broadcasters was insane. The ranking of the of the US players way too high. Pulisic being the obvious one. No, I'm not having it anywhere. The talking like oh, top 20 in the world, all that sort of stuff. No, not even close. Failed at my club.
JoshUm well, I was gonna say when I first became aware of him, I became aware of him because I heard some announcers talking about this American in Chelsea who was the LeBron James of football.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that's a great clip, isn't it? From um what's that that show where they uh the oh like that? I don't even know what you call it. Uh like that pawn shop thing where the guy takes us the signed shirt in um and he's like, uh yeah, he's uh this is uh signed Pulisit shirt, and uh the other guy goes, Oh, like his uh so he's like the l LeBron James the soccer, and we're like, not even close.
AmandaAntiques virtual? No, I think it's pawn stars.
SPEAKER_01I think yeah, I think it's porn stars. Um God, I thought it was in the porn shop.
JoshI was like, Am I gonna have to edit this out?
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that that that became a
World Cup Stories That Restore Faith
SPEAKER_01thing. Um the thing I enjoyed most about the World Cup this year, one, how well on the whole everyone got on. That was nice, and also the smaller nations did quite well, which I really I was really on board with that. That whole story in Virginia so much, genuinely. Yeah, I mean those those sorts of things. Big thing was for as as an English person, um, our match in Mexico against Mexico, where everything beforehand was a lot of don't go certain areas, it's very dangerous, blah blah blah. Everyone got on so well there that uh the plan now is for Mexico to come to England and uh be the first friendly after the World Cup is to have Mexico visit us.
AmandaSo I love that.
SPEAKER_01Uh, the the fun was the Mexicans afterwards, after they lost, was just say, Oh yeah, yeah, we want you to win this now. You go and win it. Right. Spoiler alert, we did not do that. And I think somebody really summed out quite well when they said, uh, if the world cup's shown us anything, that if we didn't have our leaders, the people of the world would largely just get on.
AmandaYeah, I saw that too. It's something similar, like that it shows us that our issues are with the leaders, not with the actual citizens of the world. And also I saw one that was like the World Cup is like the sleepover the cousins have when the adults aren't getting along or something like that. But I mean I mess it up. But yeah, I I think all of the human interest stories, and for us here, it was the Scots and Boston. You guys got that footage over there, but the Scots were just they actually drank Boston dry of beer. And so she's um she's in Boston now, and she had just gotten there right before like the the match matches started in Boston, and she was just sending pictures all the time and just and bit just so charming, and um and I I just I love that so much. And we were in Miami when um some of the games were being played, and it was fun because we were watching or worried about them going to Miami because it's a very different environment from New England to Florida, and Miami in and of itself is just very different. But then I saw like videos of of people outside like pass passing out Cuban coffee and like you know to all of the Scots, and so it's it was really sort of this lovely, like, you know, yeah, all the grown-ups can't get along, but we all really like each other. When you know, we were looking at countries where the you know the the government is horrible, but you don't vilify the team. Flags. Like we were he wanted to do a uh like name that flag video on YouTube the other day, and Josh was like, This is gonna be boring, and it Name a country, and Josh was like, That's not it, and it would be, and it was like, but he sees something once, he's he's got a really good memory for it. Photography and countries, and so I I do love sort of that whole that whole piece of it, especially corrupt, yes, you would agree.
SPEAKER_01Oh,
FIFA Corruption And Final Conspiracies
SPEAKER_01yeah, I mean you just have to look at um Argentina's run. The former leader of uh FIFA Set Blatter, incredibly corrupt man, took a lot of money, lot of money, uh came out and said, Oh yeah, infantino's gotta go. This has been this has been too this has been too corrupt. I'm like, yeah, we know, but you're saying it. There was no real way of hiding it. Um the games showed that out. There's the statistics show that out. It's um outrageous. And it's uh one of those weird things that if well, pretty much everyone felt Spanish um in that final. Yeah.
JoshNow, uh, do you give any credence to the the conspiracy theory that says that that Argentina in the locker room before the final was given the ultimatum? Lose this game, or else you'll be banned from the next few um World Cups. Have you heard that? Yeah, no, that that's the thing. They said that you hear it on TikTok. Yes, not say the idea is that they had come out with the banner talking about the Falkland Islands at the um the end of their victory against the English, they had this banner, and the theory is that because they had banner uh no, I hadn't heard that.
SPEAKER_01I mean, obviously, yeah, they did have the the banner, and we can get into the banner if you want, um, but it it there there is a thing where there's supposed to be no political statements and things like that in in the World Cup. I would be surprised if FIFA even looked at banning them um as a realistic option just because it's Argentina and that's a massive nation. Um I also I don't give anything to the fact that they uh were convinced to lose, they just weren't good enough. And as soon as they came up against a good team, they struggled.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
JoshSo you sound like you believe this thing. There's video of them in the tunnel before going out for the final where they're a bunch of them are crying, and both of you take a sip of your alcohol where they're crying, and Messi is giving them a pep talk. Um, none of them looked happy to be there beforehand. The tactics that the different tactics than he had used in any of the previous games fishy, something stinks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so Messi's an interesting one because they don't really uh well until fairly recently they didn't consider him Argentinian in Argentina um because of he never played in Argentina, um, so he was always an outsider. Tactics, I'd say the tactics were similar to the tactics they used against us. Um where they they didn't, they were just incredibly well over physical, um, didn't necessarily try and win until they went a goal down. Uh the final, they I think they knew they were out class, so they just tried essentially not to lose. Their plan seemingly was to try and get to penalties and back themselves to win there, which is not a way to win a game. Um, had Spain finished better, um, it could have been a massive score. Um, there was a lot of shots that were straight at the goalkeeper, which was again very disappointing. And as my brother Dan said, because he had to get up for work the next day, when it went to extra time, I just said, Oh no, not 30 more minutes of this.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01So there you go. It was not a good watch, but again, most finals generally aren't as as a result of all this, most of us were.
JoshYeah,
Choosing A Club And Player Backstory
Joshbut as a result of all this now, we are absolutely all in on you know, and and we've adopted already our our teams that we're gonna follow.
SPEAKER_03And I'm backing Chelsea, Gavin, because I just felt like you somebody in this house needed to.
JoshIt's wonderful, Gavin. How does it feel getting the pity?
AmandaNo, me and her husband, herdo, are Chelsea fans, and so I feel like I have somebody I can talk about. I'm gonna invite Britney to watch Chelsea matches in the pub.
JoshOh, well, that's cool.
AmandaAfterwards, but I'm sure that you've you've seen this going around the socials that the player who scored the winning goal for Spain had it sounds kind of like a Simone Biles sort of situation where he had taken time off. Is this not true? Because don't ruin this for me, because I was happy to No, no.
SPEAKER_01I mean, there's a yeah, no, there's a there's a lot of um yeah, yeah, absolutely. Uh there's a lot of stories you you got trapped there, and I don't I'm not sure why. Um there's a lot of good stories that came out of Spain. Yeah, and this one player that plays with his hair down is autistic and when he's playing, so he wait like look, I just so that's that's Mark Cucarea, uh used to play for Chelsea, was still technically a Chelsea player at the time of the World Cup, um, has is now going to Real Madrid. Big part of his thing is he's got a he's got three sons, I think it is. Um, and one of them uh this is how bad I know too much. Um his son Mateo um is autistic. The reason he chose to go to Madrid is that they could find the schools and the therapists in in Madrid that he needed. That's why he was happy to be in London because he had access to those things. And yeah, he keeps his he has his hair down and it's big and it's curly, and it's so his son, when he's playing, can pick out who's his who his dad is. And he is one of those players, though, that I love him because he plays or he played for us. Opposition fans quite often hate him. Um, he's one of one of those players. There's a lot of them about, but if they play for you, you love them. If they play for somebody else, you can't stand them.
AmandaWhat's been really also cool is watching Winthrop then figure out which Premier League players were in different countries, and then like that's also been cool because when you come into it, going, This is this person is a Spanish player, this person, and then realizing that they are playing, you know, in in these clubs that he's heard about, that's been fun for him too. That's all. I'm done. You're both looking. I'll drink more wine now out of my bottle.
Gavin’s Unhinged Lunch Date
JoshNow you're very open about this, which shocks me because some of the stories that you tell, there's no way I'd tell anyone else that this happened to me. Story uh from Gavin's dating life, shall we?
SPEAKER_01I can tell you a recent one. Probably the last date I went on. I don't date often, and when I do, these sorts of things happen, so that's probably why I don't date so often. As is quite often the way these days. Matched with a girl on an app, uh, started talking for a little bit. She's an actress. It didn't go well the previous actresses. Let's not recap that story. People can go back and find that on one of my previous visits to your podcast.
SPEAKER_03Whatever that episode is.
SPEAKER_01That one had a trigger warning on probably not gonna have to have that this time. Anyway, so matched with the this I love that you're probably not. Matched with this young lady. Um, talk for a little bit. She sends me her show reel. Yep, that actually happened.
JoshWhat maybe she was just unsure of which app or she's on so many apps because there are apps for you know for audition. For tally. By the show reel, did it win you over?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I was like, it's not something I have or do. So yeah, I'm impressed by that. I'm impressed by anybody who does something, especially if something you can't do. I always find that impressive. So that's fine. She wants to go to a certain restaurant. We're gonna go for lunch. I've had a look at the menu. For the listeners that don't know I'm vegan, there were limited options for me, let's say. I had one option, so it makes life easier. Uh no, it was um it was a burger of sorts. So we go along, everything's fine. I have to go and pick her up first. She's late. Uh what can you do? She arrives at the station, gets in the car, I drive her to the restaurant, all fine so far. We get out, she starts, uh, she lights up a joint in the car park and she says, It's okay, I've got a prescription. And I said, Okay, fine.
AmandaIt's m it's met medical marijuana is legal in the UK or in England?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm not sure about that. Uh but yeah, we'll let it go. So then we we go in, everything's fine, woman shows us things, it's all good. Everything's fine so far. We start talking about things, and we get on to her her past. So she was married previously. My age, it's likely that that's gonna be the case, to be honest. Um, she said that she got married to her ex-husband because he was very religious and wanted to have sex, and so they got married.
AmandaDude, it's really prominent in evangelical spaces.
SPEAKER_01Alright, go ahead. I don't, I don't uh yeah, go ahead. Um, but then they moved to New York. She went to a lot of New York acting schools. She named some. I'd heard of one. Yeah, that sounds cool. She also did some photography stuff and blah blah blah. I was like, okay, yeah, that's that's fun. And then she told me that her husband and his mother tried to poison her.
JoshI had some gigs in acting, I took some photos too, and by the way, that's not an and by the way. Like, as your storytelling, it's gonna be like, oh, I gotta tell you this thing about me that's pretty crazy, right?
SPEAKER_01I mean, first dates are a lot of let me tell you this about me. You tell me this about you. Like it's that it's that sort of thing, isn't it? But I mean, it was early on to be leading with this.
JoshI almost got poisoned by an in-law, is like date number three, uh, in my estimation. Uh possibly, possibly.
AmandaI mean, because I'm immediately, and this is bad because this is not victim, I guess this is victim blaming, but I'm immediately, well, what did you do to warrant the poisoning? Jesus. I know, it's horrible. What is he? I'm setting feminism back like 50 years.
JoshThis story, as we're going through this now, how am I the ally to women and you're not?
AmandaI just think oh I just well, first of all, I dated two actors because of my my undergrads in theater. I dated two actors and swore them off. Friend, they are dramatic. Like, this is not this is not a space in which you want to to be settling your life in.
JoshAny normal, like not dramatic actors out there. I apologize for my wife. Gavin, best that you keep keep talking now.
AmandaI mean, the one I dated slipped his arm open and wrote I love you in blood and gave it to me. So, like, they're they're they're they're a lot. Anyway, go ahead.
SPEAKER_01I I I mean, I would also say any non-uh dramatic actors, feel free to get in touch. Um actually, dramatic actors get in touch as well.
AmandaYou know, I'll have another real have you been poisoned.
SPEAKER_01I'll have another store for a story for you again, then won't I? Um, anyway, so poison. Poisoning happens. She then claims to have had a heart attack due to the poisoning. Nobody believed her. When the paramedics arrived, they didn't believe her. She thought she was having some sort of mental health episode, didn't take her to ED, took her to a mental health facility. She was there a while. A nurse believed her, is what she said. They took her to the ED at that point. She also tells me that uh while she's in the mental health facility, somebody collapses and she does CPR to revive them because the grandfather on her mother's side was a doctor and she felt his spirit work through her. Which at that point, bearing in mind my medical background, I'm thinking I'm probably not the person to tell this story to.
AmandaAlso, this might be due to the THC in her system. I would like to point out.
JoshOh, that's a good point.
AmandaSo I didn't know about the THC the first time I heard the spirit story, and now I'm thinking that maybe that was a little bit of that. But no, she clearly believes this.
SPEAKER_01Then she tells me that because of the hospitalization, uh, when she gets out, she's she was living homeless in New York for a while, and then she was in shelters, and there was some uh she would tell me stories of people in there as well.
AmandaOh god, how long was this lunch?
SPEAKER_01Three hours or so.
AmandaNo, friend.
JoshOh no. Um at what point during this three hour lunch, like at what time mark, were you trying to plan your escape?
SPEAKER_01I've got to drive at home.
JoshUm, but still, you have to transition to I gotta get this woman to agree to get. Back in my car. Now, I may be selling you short. It's it may have been there's a point where you switch from okay, this is not relationship material, but can I get a nice shag out of this? Like at what what's happening in your mind?
SPEAKER_03That's not Gavin.
SPEAKER_01Um, so in my mind, I'm thinking, this sounds insane. A lot of this sounds insane. Um, well, we'll ride out today, and that'll probably be it.
JoshRight, but what type of riding were you thinking? This is my point of view.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no.
AmandaYou don't want that crazy in your bed.
SPEAKER_01No. Um, talk to her about my life a little bit in amongst all of this. Um, and I just uh we end up talking about family, talk about my grandfather, she starts crying. Anytime I talk about my family in any way, she starts crying because apparently I have a good relationship with my family and she wishes she had that. There's part of you that really doesn't want to start thinking, I can see why you don't. You're trying to hold that up anyway. Eventually, the we get to the end of the day, or the end of lunch. I pay so we can leave. Back out to the car. I have to wait again for her there because she has to smoke again now.
AmandaWell, yeah, because she's now like just really worked up and sad.
SPEAKER_01Because you fucking triggered her, man. What's wrong with you? Keep going on.
AmandaI didn't do anything. You're a good grandfather.
SPEAKER_01I take her, I take her home, give her a hug in the car, away we go, all good. She then messages me when I'm driving home saying, I really wish you'd kissed me then. This is the thing, I don't really know how to react to things. I'm not good at these things, clearly not good at these things. So I said, Oh, well, you know, maybe next time.
AmandaNo, Gavin.
SPEAKER_01You idiot.
AmandaOh, Gavin, you were so close to freedom.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's okay, freedom comes. And then she asked me a couple of other questions because she's like, I'm not sure about that about you. I'm like, whoa, hang on. You're not sure about that about me? Like, I think I should be the one that's got questions in. Um, but anyway, so when she started. She I don't know. I don't know.
AmandaThat's fine.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to get you to make sense of someone who I don't think was quite like a real- Oh, I haven't made sense of it yet, so um, and then she starts to become really intense with her messaging, starts saying things like, I want I want that kind of extreme, obsessed with you kind of love. Uh otherwise I just don't want to bother with it. And she starts saying more and more these sorts of things, at which point I say, Okay, I don't think I'm the person for you. Which then triggers quite an explosive response in which I got called a lot of things.
AmandaOh god.
SPEAKER_01Um, before I could even respond, she blocked me. Okay, well so no second date.
JoshOh, here's
Self-Worth And Dating Guardrails
Joshthe thing you know, that this this whole time, the reason why we started this whole thing with what time is it? Is because we wanted to give you advice and to help you. But I'm starting to think the more that that I just you know, I'm scrolling online and all this and that, the more that I'm aware that this is probably a lot of people's experience with dating. That that our world is so fucked right now that people are just not they're not handling anything well.
SPEAKER_01Certainly, I think you talk to a lot of different people, you'll find people have these maybe not quite the same stories I have, but some stories. Um I think for me, I am responsible. I would say I am responsible for a lot of it myself. I do bring a lot of it on myself, and this is gonna this is gonna sound sad, and I'm not trying to look for sympathy or anything, but I genuinely think I have a fairly low opinion of myself. So if anybody shows interest or um is attracted to me, I one, I can't figure it out, and then two, I will go along with a lot more than I should do.
AmandaGavin, I just want to hug you. It's very hard to be this far away from you, but I just want to hug you now.
JoshI think what this sounds like then is that the solution to your problems, or at least a big solution to your problems, is let someone else vet the people for you and let them make the decision. So, like you have a personal assistant, even an AI assistant, right? Or or something that only allows the people through on these apps that aren't crazy, that don't exhibit the signs.
SPEAKER_01I do have a friend who has told me that she has three girls that she thinks would be right for me. This this so we may be exploring this in the in the near future.
AmandaFriend who has who knows you well, correct? Is this a person who knows you well?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, fairly well, yeah.
AmandaOkay, and knows these people well. Let's try these and then and then please come back and report.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, I'll let you know how that goes.
JoshI I I think that it should be to the point where they get your your login credentials and then they don't then they change the password so that you can't have it. Now, once you're on the date, you're still on your own. So, I mean that is step number two in this whole process, but at least let's put some sort of filter in there so that um I'd actually be curious to see your dating profile.
AmandaI need you to create a profile just so you can go match with Gavin.
JoshYou want me to catfish him?
AmandaYeah, no, I I I no as yourself.
JoshIf you're gonna no that is I don't think you want me creating dating apps, my little friend.
AmandaNo, I don't know. I mean, some of these days I'm I'd be okay with it because you're mean to me.
Paramenopause Tangent And Listener Emails
JoshMy god, what is happening right now?
AmandaYou're mean to me in my paramenopausal state. I'm not mean to you. You know what I learned to do.
JoshHow do we turn this into about you? We're talking about Gavin. No, it's okay.
AmandaGavin's okay for me telling you this. I learned today, I sent you a reel on Instagram, and it's a man spanning paramenopause to all of the men. I mean, he's doing the Lord's work, let's be honest.
JoshSo he's doing a good job then.
AmandaAnd for a man to experience the amount of like turmoil that a woman's body physically, uh chemically, hormonally goes through during paramenopause, you would have to age 120 years in a week and then crash back from it and be normal. And then the next time you age 150 years, like because chemically, what would need to happen in your body would take so many years compared to what happens in such a short time in my body. Sorry. Does that sound medically sound, Kevin? I mean Gavin's like, I am 100% not talking about touching this.
JoshNo, I I'm sorry, I drifted away. Could you say that again? No, sure.
AmandaI'm telling you, he's either like really confident in my love for him or he just likes being dangerous.
JoshOh no, it's just that my my newly found ADHD doesn't allow me to focus very well sometimes.
AmandaUm, friend, you you just are newly acknowledging it. It has been a part of your life for your whole life. I'm well aware of this part of you.
JoshOkay, and you love me anyway.
AmandaI do love you, but this is not about us, it's about Gavin. Gavin, you're gonna go out with these people that your friend is going to identify for you.
JoshY'all, do you have any advice for Gavin? Email us at familiarwilsons at gmail.com and let us know what you think Gavin should do.
AmandaDan Belson, you were not allowed to email us.
SPEAKER_01I was about to say the same thing. Yeah.
JoshSo now
Flashbacks Game And Timeline Guesses
Joshwe're gonna move into game time. Amanda, this is your shtick here, so go ahead, take it. Take it away.
AmandaWell, so we've done the flashbacks before, which is a timeline of events in history, and Josh has to put them on a timeline of before or after the anchoring event. However, last time he was very upset by it and said he never wanted to do it again until this week when Gavin came on and he said, let's do this for Gavin so that maybe I'm not the only person who looks like a fool trying to do this. So we are gonna do game time. Uh it's a New York Times game called Flashbacks.
JoshI'm gonna sponsor.
AmandaI keep trying, they're not interested. Now, Josh likes to play the real game, is you just have to say before or after. Josh likes to play where he likes to try to say when it actually happened. You are welcome to do that. You are welcome to also just say before or after.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I I I can have a guess. I'm not great on times. Neither or any anything that involves kind of measurements of anything, I'm very bad at.
AmandaSo we won't ask you how far distances are here. We're just gonna say before or after. So our anchoring event, and usually there are clues based on technology.
JoshOn the apps, when you put nine inches, then that's probably Oh my god, you're a horrible person. Accurate by a lot.
AmandaOkay, anyway, here's your first event. Ready?
JoshGo ahead.
AmandaPartly inspired by seeing paper fed into a printer, Gary Anderson designs the recycling symbol. Fascinating history right here.
JoshJesus. So the question is what when was the recycling symbol?
AmandaYes. Do you guys have that recycling symbol with the green arrows that go?
SPEAKER_01Green arrows, yeah. I am gonna say 68.
AmandaOkay, Josh.
Josh1968? Yeah, absolutely not. I'm gonna say 19. I'm gonna say 1990.
Amanda1970. Oh, sure. Good job, Gavin. So, so your anchoring event is 1970. Now you just need to tell me before or after. And the Valley of Mexico, the megacity, oh Lord. T O Oh, I can't say this. Oh Lord. Um T E O T I H U A C A N.
JoshI'm not spelling that.
AmandaOkay. I can't say it. Boast apartments, basic plumbing, and pyramid architecture. More than a hundred thousand people live there. Was this before or after 1970?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go with before.
AmandaProbably very valid.
SPEAKER_01I have no idea. Um one thousand.
JoshI'm saying fourteen hundred.
AmandaFour hundred and fifty BC? I mean not BC, so four hundred and fifty currently. CCE or whatever it is called now. Johann Sebastian Bach, so like anchor yourself in whatever Bach lived, enjoys coffee so much that he composes the coffee cantata, which describes the drink as lovelier than a thousand kisses.
SPEAKER_01Um, well, it's gonna be after the Mexican City, yes, um, and before the recycling thing.
AmandaThat is correct.
SPEAKER_01I do want to know about this coffee that he's been having.
AmandaRight?
SPEAKER_01Um because I'm not a big coffee drinker, but that sounds good.
AmandaLovelier than a thousand kisses, Kevin.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he didn't even have to sit through an insane date. Well, we don't actually um I don't know when uh Bach was around. 1764.
AmandaJosh?
Josh1730.
AmandaOoh, 1732. Did you look it up?
JoshNo.
AmandaDid you know about Bach?
JoshUh Johann Sebastian Bach, I think I've heard of him a couple times.
AmandaNo, did you know when the gentleman was having the coffee that is lovelier than the other thing?
JoshI don't know anything about the coffee, but I know that he was in the 170 uh first half of the 1700s.
AmandaAll right, there you go. All right, but you're still all winning the game. In San Francisco, steep hills plague humans and horses alike. So the city launches a solution inspired by mining vehicles, the cable car. Oh I didn't know that was inspired by mining vehicles.
SPEAKER_01Before recycling. After Bach. That's a safe.
AmandaThat's a safe bet. Because America, I don't think it w was a country before before Bach.
SPEAKER_01Uh I don't know in terms of year. 1890.
JoshGosh. Oh, you know what? I wrote down 1890, so we're gonna say 1895.
Amanda1873. Clarence Birdseye, which I don't know that this will mean anything to you, Gavin, because this is an American brand. Clarence Birdseye, a naturalist, is inspired by seeing Inuits use icy air to freeze fish. He develops a technique for flash freezing leading to the rise of frozen foods. So birdseye is a big like frozen vegetable. Do you have birdseye there?
SPEAKER_01We do.
AmandaOkay, alright.
SPEAKER_01They had a very catchy TV commercial uh for their potato waffles.
AmandaI don't think we have potato waffles. We just have peas.
SPEAKER_01Uh before uh between the cable car and the and park.
AmandaOkay.
JoshI'm gonna say yeah, that between uh no, I'm gonna say because I I thought it was like 1925 or something. So like between San Francisco and recycling.
Amanda1825 or 1925?
Josh1925.
Amanda1923.
JoshOh, okay, very good. Bird's eye. I've already screwed up my little graph that I'm drawing here, so all right.
AmandaThree more. As the Dust Bowl peaks, do you know the Dust Bowl? Is this a thing you're aware of, Gavin?
SPEAKER_01Uh I believe there was some photography done around that time.
AmandaSo it's basically a massive drought that happened in in the was it like the midlands in Florida in Florida in the US? I don't actually know where it happened. The middle. The middle of the country. Yeah. Okay. As the Dust Bowl peaks, Laura Ingleswelder writes about her frontier childhood. Her novel, Little House on the Prairie, becomes an instant bestseller. Have you heard of Little House on the Prairie?
SPEAKER_01Uh only the TV show.
AmandaSo I just learned, did you know they rebooted it? Right, you and I saw it recently because I was like, is this because I thought it was just like a remastering, but no, they've like they're re I need people to get their own stuff. Stop bringing back all of the things, like make new things.
SPEAKER_01Uh I'm gonna say between cable car and birdseye.
AmandaYeah, that's what I would have thought.
JoshUm I'm gonna say between birdseye and recycling, because I think it's like the the 19.
AmandaYou think it's in the 40s?
Josh40s or 30s, so I'll say 1940.
AmandaOkay. 1935. Good Josh. Gavin Josh is feeding you by two now.
JoshLittle House on the Prairie set earlier, but she wrote them during the It became a bestseller in 1935. Yeah, there you go.
AmandaOkay. An Italian father sues his son for using family money for church repairs. The son, Francis of Assisi, moves into a cave and later founds the Franciscan Order.
JoshWait, so the Franciscan Order was was based upon the son stealing shit, and then he's like, fuck that shit, I'm gonna cruise.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I have no idea.
AmandaI have no idea when this gentleman would have been alive.
SPEAKER_01Um I'm gonna say um after Mexico, um, before whatever the next thing was.
JoshYou mean in that very small time period between 450 AD and 1730? Yeah, I think that that's probably a safe guess.
AmandaAnd yes, uh Francis of a CC was the patron saint of animals.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna say patron saint, I know.
AmandaAll right, because you love the animals. Okay.
JoshI'm gonna say 1000 AD.
AmandaOkay. Well, you're both in the same place on the timeline, you're just going extra. Uh 1206. So you both got that right.
JoshYes, but I got it more right.
AmandaOkay. Two more. King Manuel of Portugal accepts a gift. Oh, this is sad. The first rhinoceros in Europe in generations. Because of its long journey, sailors give the animal the nickname Ulysses. Oh. Which is timely because the Odyssey just came out.
SPEAKER_01Um before Bach. And I can't think uh Yeah.
AmandaYou are correct.
JoshYeah, okay.
AmandaWell, you talked with F8s.
JoshThat's also where I would put it.
AmandaI know, which is I felt confident enough that that's what you were gonna say.
Josh1400.
Amanda1515.
JoshI think that I'm winning this.
AmandaOkay. I think you've already won it. Alright, here's the last one. Ready? European beer is earthy thanks to a pungent mix of herbs and flowers. So Frankish brewers make the first recorded use of another ingredient for beer. Can anyone guess?
SPEAKER_01Hops. Uh sometimes, yeah.
AmandaDo you like it to be hoppy or herby?
SPEAKER_01I can't think of any herbie beer, to be honest.
AmandaThey all live in Europe. That's why you've been Brexited away from them.
SPEAKER_01That's the problem. Beer's been around forever. Um has it? Well, pretty much. Between a CC and the rhino.
AmandaOkay.
JoshAll right, I'm gonna put it between the Mexican plumbing and a CC at like 600 AD. 822.
AmandaSorry, Gavin, but I do appreciate you playing, but Josh did beat you, which I think was the point because Josh was feeling bad about it last week, and so he needed to feel better this week.
JoshListen, we take it where we can get it, baby. Thank you, Gavin, for um helping my self-esteem. I certainly appreciate it.
AmandaAnd we just went from a section where Gavin was talking about poor self-esteem, and then just you just like ground it in some more.
JoshI mean, but I didn't intentionally ground it in, just like this poor actress that he that he dated and then left.
AmandaListen, I have questions about somebody who needs to smoke a joint before going to lunch and then like gets really worked up. Like, clearly wasn't like at a medicinal. I don't think that there's a prescription because it was not at a medicinal level for themselves.
JoshI hope she's doing well.
AmandaI I mean thoughts and prayers.
JoshCan you send me her show reel?
AmandaNo.
JoshNo, I'm just really curious. I'm I'm just really curious.
SPEAKER_01I can have a look and see if I've still got it.
AmandaYeah, I was like, did you do you sit did you save it? Do you watch it at night? All right, that's all there is. There is no more. What'd you think about that? You don't know what to do with that, do you? We've been doing this for six years, and I never know how to answer that. And it never occurred to me that you've never had that asked of you.
JoshI thought we were pretty much all over the place, but I think that that's our show
Guest Plug And Podcast Fever Dream
Joshnow. I think our show has morphed. Uh, Gavin, tell us about your show, please.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so uh be there with Belson, me and my brother Dan. Um we have been going for six years now. Um seven in October. It's a conversation between the two of us, essentially all over the shop, lots of different topics. Still my favourite review we ever had was uh from somebody that we uh we all know, a guy called Dean, who described us as his favourite fever dream of a podcast. Um the think thinking being that as soon as he understands what topic we're on to or what topic we're talking about, we've moved on to the next thing. We really should slow that down. We burn through topics ridiculously, but we also suggest songs um at the end, which we have very different musical tastes. So we have a Spotify playlist because of that, and if anyone listens to that, if you listen to it in order, it makes no sense at all. Yeah, that's that's us really. Um feel free to listen or don't, it's okay, we'll be okay. Um we gotta work on self-promotion.
JoshThat's amazing.
SPEAKER_01Hey, we're looking even if no one listens, we'll still do it because it's an opportunity for me to speak to to Dan for an hour a week uninterrupted.
AmandaAnd you still like him?
SPEAKER_01Uh most of the time. But uh, yeah, so uh out every Monday. There's only been a couple of weeks where we've missed or been late. The consistency is what we're proud of more than anything. I should have stopped talking about two or three minutes ago about this, but all right.
JoshWe would
